Harlon Ellison’s Chilling Tale of Human Terror

I’ve always been a fan of point and click adventure games. My childhood and adolescence were full of great titles like The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, The Dig, and Full Throttle. Even today I enjoy titles like The Longest Journey, Dreamfall Chapters, Minecraft Story Mode, and Blackwell Legacy.

I am surprised I overlooked this title. Not only is it one of my favorite genres it is also based on Harlon Ellison’s award-winning work. While I am sad to say that I am not familiar with the breadth of his work I know of the author because of his collaboration, and drama, with Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek The Original Series. The City on the Edge of Forever is widely regarded as the best episode of Star Trek.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a very different beast. It is a tale of endless torment and suffering. The story is set 109 years after humanity’s death at the hands of the

insane AI AM. Five survivors remain, vestiges of the world that once was. AM, touting himself as their benevolent God and personal tormentor, subjects each of these people to a trial. No trial is the same but each one forces each person to look deep inside themselves and confront all their ugliness hidden beneath the surface.

In the video above we follow Ellen, a woman suffering from deep emotional trauma and revulsion to the color yellow. AM Subjects her to a great yellow pyramid, in a yellow desert, all lit in yellow with the promise of doing some harm to him.

I have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a chilling game that left me feeling just a little bit dirty. I need to go read the short story and the rest of Ellison’s writing.
