War for Cybertron Revisited – Livestream Archive

Transformers: War for Cybertron

War for Cybertron is a Third Person action game developed by High Moon Studios and published by Activision in 2010. The game was well received by both critics and users and is still regarded as one of the best representations of the Transformers IP. I am livestreaming this game and its sequel, Fall of Cybertron, on Monday evenings over the next few weeks.

The Transformers has come a long way from its origins. What began as an animated television series designed to market and sell toys to kids has evolved into a expanded universe of stories across multiple mediums. Eleven television series, One web series, five feature films, three comic book runs, and numerous video games have been produced in the last 30 years. High Moon’s Cybertron series is regarded as one of the best versions of the Transformers for a number of reasons.

Good vs Evil:

The Binary conflict of Autobot vs Decepticon is in full force from the first moment of the game. Optimus and the Autobots are fighting for the freedom of their people. Megatron uses the Decepticons secure ultimate power for himself. His campaign goal is to conquer and dominate the heart of Cybertron, the source of all life on the planet. That’s the equivalent of creating a monopoly on drinkable water and using that leverage to gain political power over a region. An evil goal if there ever was one.

A Living Cybertron:

The planet comes to life in this game in a way never seen before. Like the transformers themselves, the planet is a living machine that can alter itself to suit the needs of its inhabitants. The game introduces different forms of machine life and unique biomes ravaged by war.

Useful Vehicle Forms:

Changing between robot and vehicle mode integral to anything Transformers. In War for Cybertron the alternate forms of each character add more to the game than a disguise. They are combat and mobility forms that can provide a significant edge in a combat. In fact, there are entire chapters built around flying units like Starscream and Silverbolt.

Origins and depth:

Though the game never gets bogged down with excessive exposition or cutaway narrative there are moments where the game hints at a bigger story, teases of character origins that go deeper than what you see on the surface. In chapter one of the Decepticon campaign Megatron hints that Starscream’s  past may be more than it seems. Simillarly in Chapter one of the Autobot campaign Optimus implies that he and Megatron have a past history. These teases of history add a layer of mystery that keeps the story interesting and the player attentive to more hints at the unspoken past.
Transformers: War for Cybertron is an exciting and engaging adventure in an alien mechanical world. I look forward to sharing the adventure with all of you over the next month as I play though the series.
