Welcome to Live Love Play and this Highlight from Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In this highlight Geralt, the Witcher, fulfills his contract to banish a Noonwraith haunting a village well. Keep reading for some commentary about the Witcher 3.Role Playing Games are no strangers to epic stories, fantastic characters, and morally grey choices. Series like Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, and Diablo have championed the genre for decades. In comes upstart developer CD Projekt Red and their debut title, The Witcher. Based on the writing of Polish Author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher introduces the player to a very different kind of fantasy RPG.
I was very surprised by The Witcher when I began playing. The game was referred to me by my friend Eric who praised the game’s mechanics but also your ability to bed down every bored villager, tavern wench, and whore you come across. It took me some time to understand the game and I nearly quit completely when faced with the game’s first boss, the spectral hound known as The Beast. But after taking a break I gained a better understanding of the tactical nature of the game’s combat and slew the mongrel with ease.
The Witcher’s Story is an interesting one, the tale of an amnesiac trying to reclaim his memory set against a backdrop on unrest in the Kingdom of Temeria. The combination of racial tensions, armed insurgency, religious zeal, Feudal Politics, and espionage make for a compelling narrative as Geralt wanders though the quagmire of conflict trying his best to stay neutral, and failing in the end. A side must always be chosen.
The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings doubled down on the success of the original, taking the best elements of the game both in story and in mechanics and expanding upon them. The story stakes were greater both for Geralt and the environment. Combat is streamlined and the moral choices become ever more grey as Geralt fights to clear his name after being framed for the death of a king.
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt further refines the systems improved on in the previous game and brings Geralt into a fully open world ravaged by conquest. Temeria never recovered from the death of their King and the country was easily conquered by the Kingdom of Nilfguard. Geralt navigates this realm on horseback and on foot in search of his surrogate daughter, Ciri. The clip above takes place very early in the game and is only a small taste of what Geralt is in for on the long journey across the conquered realm of Temeria.
